Odd One Out is a free imposter game you play with words. Everyone in the room gets the same secret word, except one player: the Odd One Out, who has no idea what it is. Take turns giving a short clue, talk it over for 30 seconds, then vote on who you think is bluffing. Think of it as a game like Among Us, but with words instead of spaceships. It runs in your browser on any phone, tablet or computer, there is nothing to download and you don't need an account. A room holds 3 to 10 players, and you can practise against three computer players first.

What is an imposter word game?

An imposter word game is a social deduction party game. Most of the table shares a piece of information, and one player has to pretend they share it too. The players who know the word try to prove it to each other without making it obvious to the imposter. The imposter listens closely, picks up what they can and tries to blend in. Every clue is a small balancing act: too vague and you look suspicious, too exact and you hand the word to the Odd One Out.

How to play Odd One Out in 4 steps

  1. Get your card. At the start of each round everyone sees the secret word, except the Odd One Out, whose card says so. The category (Food, Places, Pakistan, Cricket or Movies) is shown to everybody.
  2. Give one clue. Players take turns typing a clue of one to three words. You can't use the secret word itself, or repeat a clue someone already gave. The Odd One Out never has to go first.
  3. Discuss for 30 seconds. All the clues are on the table. Use the room chat to question anyone who sounded unsure. When everyone taps Ready to vote, or the timer runs out, voting opens.
  4. Vote. Everyone votes at the same time for the player they think is the Odd One Out. If the most votes land on the imposter, they are caught, but they get one guess at the word to steal points back.

Scoring

Points carry over from round to round, and the highest total after the last round wins. If the Odd One Out escapes the vote (or the vote ties), they score 3 points. If they are caught and miss their guess, every other player scores 1 point, and everyone who voted for them scores 1 more. If they are caught but name the word, the imposter scores 2 and each correct voter scores 1. The host can choose 3, 5 or 8 rounds, and a new Odd One Out is picked every round.

Play the imposter game online with friends

Press Create room, then share the room code or the invite link in your group chat. Friends open it on their own phones and take a seat. Each person needs their own device, because your secret word appears only on your own screen. If someone's connection drops, they can rejoin their seat with their score. Friends who arrive late can watch as spectators, and spectators never see the word until the reveal. Try the Decoy word rule for a harder game: the Odd One Out sees a similar word and doesn't know they are the odd one out.

Play vs Computer

Want to learn the rules first? Press Play vs Computer to play against three computer players. They give clues, vote and bluff, and sometimes they will be the Odd One Out too.

Word categories

  • Food: biryani, samosa, pizza, mango and more.
  • Places: the beach, the airport, a library, a space station.
  • Pakistan: Lahore, the Badshahi Mosque, K2, chai, truck art.
  • Cricket: the googly, the umpire, a six, the wicketkeeper.
  • Movies: Titanic, Jurassic Park, Toy Story, The Lion King.

The default Mixed pack draws from all five, with 100 words in total.

Tips for good clues

  • Pick a clue that only makes sense if you know the word, but that fits more than one word in the category.
  • Late in the order, build on other people's clues instead of adding a new giveaway.
  • Watch for clues that are safe but empty, like “tasty” or “popular”. They are a classic sign of an Odd One Out.

Tips for bluffing as the Odd One Out

  • Listen to the clues before yours and give a clue that fits all of them.
  • Stay confident in the chat. Asking too many questions draws attention.
  • If you get caught, think back over every clue before you guess. A good guess still earns you 2 points.
