GUIDE #298
How to Play Rang (Cards - Court Piece) Online
Rang, also called Court Piece or Rung, is the classic Pakistani and Indian partnership card game. Two teams of two sit opposite each other. The caller picks trump after seeing five cards, and won tricks are collected only on trick 3 and then every second trick. The first team to collect 7 tricks takes the hand. Collecting 7 while the opponents have none is a Kot, worth double.
01 // CONTROLS
Controls
- The caller taps a suit button to choose trump
- On your turn, only legal cards glow. Tap a card to play it (on a phone: tap to select, tap again to play)
- A countdown runs on your turn. If time runs out, the computer plays a sensible card for you
02 // STEPS
Step by step
- 01
Teams
Four players, partners opposite each other (seats 1 and 3 against seats 2 and 4). Empty seats are played by the computer only if the host fills them.
- 02
Deal and call trump
The dealer deals 5 cards each. Play runs counter-clockwise, as is usual in Pakistan, so the player on the dealer’s right is the caller: they look at their 5 cards and choose the trump suit (rang). Then everyone is dealt up to 13 cards.
- 03
Play tricks
The caller leads the first trick. You must follow the suit that was led if you can; if you cannot, you may trump or throw any card. The highest trump wins, otherwise the highest card of the led suit. Aces are high. The trick winner leads next.
- 04
Collecting tricks
A won trick is not yours yet: it stays in a pile in the middle of the table. The winner of trick 3 collects all 3 tricks in the pile. After that only every second trick collects — the winners of tricks 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13 each take the 2 tricks played since the last collection. Tricks 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 only give their winner the next lead. The table shows how many tricks are waiting and flags the trick that collects. Trick 13 always collects, so nothing is left over (if a pile were ever left when the cards run out, it would go to the last trick’s winner).
- 05
Win the hand
The first team to collect 7 tricks wins the hand; the rest are not played. Only collected tricks count.
- 06
Kot
If one team collects 7 tricks while the other team has collected none (at the earliest on trick 7: 3 + 2 + 2), that is a Kot (court). It counts as 2 hands toward the match and is tallied separately on the scoreboard.
- 07
Next deal
If the calling team wins, the same dealer deals again and the same side calls. If the calling team loses, the deal passes to the caller, so the other team calls trump next hand.

Pro tips
- Choose the suit you hold the most of as trump; high cards in it are a bonus.
- Lead your side-suit aces early before opponents run out of that suit.
- When your partner is already winning a trick, play low and save your strength.
- Save your trumps and aces for the collecting tricks (3, 5, 7…); winning a non-collecting trick only gives you the lead.
- Keep a trump or two back to stop a Kot.
04 // FAQ
Rang (Cards - Court Piece) FAQ
What is a Kot in Rang?
A Kot means one team collected 7 tricks while the other team collected none. Here it counts as 2 hands toward the match and is shown as a big bonus.
Who chooses trump?
The player on the dealer’s right, after seeing their first 5 cards. Play goes counter-clockwise, the usual convention in Pakistan.
When are tricks collected?
On trick 3 the winner collects the first 3 tricks; after that every second trick (5, 7, 9, 11, 13) collects the 2 tricks since the last collection. Other tricks stay in the middle and only decide who leads next.

Not as a separate mode. This table uses the collect-on-3-then-every-2nd rule with an open trump called on five cards; hidden-trump Sir/Sar play is not included.
