How to play Block Drop Duel

Block Drop Duel is a free Tetris-style block puzzle you play online against a real opponent. Both players get the same falling pieces in the same order, so the match is decided by speed and stacking, not luck.

Rules

Seven kinds of four-block pieces fall into a 10-wide, 20-tall well. Move and rotate each piece before it lands; a full horizontal row clears. Clearing two lines at once sends 1 garbage row to your rival, three lines send 2 and a four-line clear sends 4, with bonuses for back-to-back fours and clear streaks. Garbage rises from the bottom with one gap, after their next piece locks, unless they clear lines first to cancel it. The pieces fall faster as the match goes on. Stack above the top and you lose.

Controls

Keyboard: ← → move, ↑ or X rotates, Z rotates back, ↓ soft drops, Space hard drops, C or Shift holds a piece for later. On a phone or tablet, swipe sideways to move, tap to rotate, flick down to drop and swipe up to hold, or use the buttons. In Local vs, P1 uses WASD + Space + Q and P2 the arrows + Enter + /.

Tips

Keep your stack flat and leave one column open for the long I piece. Watch the red bar beside your well: that is incoming garbage, and any clear you make cancels it first. The ghost outline shows exactly where a hard drop will land.

Can I play against the computer?

Yes. Easy, Medium and Hard levels; Easy and Medium are beatable with steady stacking.

What does hold do?

Hold stores the current piece and swaps it back later. You can hold once per piece.
