Go: Surrounding, Patience, and a Fair Komi

You do not capture a king. You surround enough of the board that the other color runs out of room.

How people play

9×9 for a short game, 13×13 or 19×19 when you want air. Room-code online, Local vs, or vs Computer. Two passes, mark dead groups, Chinese score plus komi.

Common challenges

  • Filling dame too early Playing inside your own eye space and handing the opponent a ko.
  • Ignoring superko Trying to recapture the same stone immediately.
  • Killing seki Marking a shared-liberty group dead and gifting the opponent the points.

What strong play proves

A Go win on area scoring shows you can count, live with two eyes, and stop when the border is good enough.

What it improves

  • Forward planning You rehearse “if I do this, they do that” before you commit.
  • Spatial reasoning Board geometry and paths matter more than raw luck.
  • Patience Waiting for the right moment beats forcing a bad one.
  • Competitive grit Rematches teach you to reset emotion and try a new plan.

Best for

Players who want a slower strategy classic than chess tactics or checkers jumps.
